I guess I just look at someone like Marco and see a guy who figured out, at least for now, how to hook his wagon to a horse that was running in a direction that seemed interesting. And, now, somehow, he’s a man who types things that turn into stuff that makes my and your world a little better.

Russell Peters – “Soccer Huddle”

I had the privilege of seeing Peters live in Washington D.C. last May. He is unbelievable.

It’s about scarcity, and the lust that scarcity engenders in those driven to possess what others can never have.

Regardless of context (in this case, coffee) this is a beautifully written sentence.

Reeder 2 iPhone App Preview

Mar 26 2010 Published by Patrick under Uncategorized

Looks like a good update to a fantastic iPhone application. Reeder has really changed the way that I interact with Google Reader. I’ll look at stuff on the phone first before anywhere else and I’ll do all my triaging there. I’ve found with Reeder I can blow through lots of feeds very quickly. I’ll star anything of interest and then, ideally at least, when I’m on the desktop the only thing I’ll have to look at is the Starred items folder. It’s working extremely well.

And also, what a beautiful web page. Elegant, simple, functional. Very, very nicely done.

3G vs EDGE on China Unicom

Mar 25 2010 Published by Patrick under Uncategorized

I recently switched service on my iPhone 3G from China Mobile to China Unicom so I could get on Unicom’s 3G network.

Asked for some numbers on the speeds I was getting, and due to my own curiosity, I decided to run side-by-side speed tests of the China Unicom EDGE and 3G networks.

These tests were done using the Xtreme Labs Speed Test iPhone app. The EDGE test was done in the subway where the network downgrades to what I would assume is approximately EDGE speeds. I’ve done this test before while on China Mobile’s EDGE network and I remember getting similar speeds to what you see here.

First, the EDGE:

Edge Speed

And now, the 3G:

3g Speed

In a word: Wow.

That 3G is fast. If the average speeds while on China Unicom’s 3G even approach that on a daily basis, the service is worth every penny (or 分, if we’re using Chinese) that I’m paying for it.

I have to say, in the three days since switching over to the China Unicom 3G I’ve been very pleased with it. The connection speeds have been excellent, but they have also been much more reliable. I sync several apps between my iPhone and the desktop/web on a regular basis (mainly Simplenote, Instapaper, and Reeder) and the syncing over 3G has been infinitely better than over EDGE. The one downside is that the 3G signal isn’t quite as ubiquitous as the EDGE was. I regularly lose 3G service on the subway (I almost always got consistent EDGE service through China Mobile), and it usually either downgrades to the equivalent of EDGE or cuts out entirely. I also tend to lose service in places like elevators, etc. For me though, that’s worth it to get such a fast connection the rest of the time.
